The bikepacking experts at Soto know that every gram counts on tour. If you're cycling around the world on a gravel bike or have a lot of mountain passes ahead of you on an Alpine adventure, you don't want to lug around a whole kitchenette - you need lightweight bikepacking gear.
Cookers and pots made from the lightweight metal titanium are particularly light and robust. The Japanese company Soto has long specialised in outdoor equipment made of titanium in its own local factory and was able to construct the 2020 and 2024 Olympic torches thanks to its expertise. The latter was the first in history not to go out during the entire period.
"Soto" means "outdoor" and is a pioneer for gas and petrol cookers. The Japanese company's latest series of titanium cookware is aimed specifically at discerning bikepackers. Each set weighs just 127 grams. The lightweight pots and the minimalist cooker are not even extremely expensive.
Thanks to the use of titanium, the Soto Windmaster weighs significantly less than a bar of chocolate, namely between 67 and 87 grams depending on the pot holder. Such a small, lightweight gas cooker is ideal for cyclists travelling by bike, to venture into the hinterland with bikepacking bags.
Despite all its minimalism, the Soto Windmaster cooker is said to deliver a full 3260 watts of power and thus reliably provide hot meals or drinks even in challenging climatic conditions.
The name is of course no coincidence. The patented "Windmaster" technology is designed to protect the flame from the wind and thus save fuel. An integrated micro-regulator system promises constant performance even with almost empty cartridges and low temperatures.
With efficient use of a 230 gram gas cartridge by two people, Soto claims a service life of up to ten days. This means that even remote routes should not be a problem. The built-in piezo ignition makes a lighter superfluous.
With the option of a 14.4 centimetre support, larger pots also fit on the Soto Windmaster. Cost: 84.95 euros >> e.g. available here.
The bikepacking range from Soto includes two titanium pots. The Titanium Pot 750 is recommended for a quick coffee in the morning, the Titanium Pot 1100 is large enough for the filling pasta pan.
Nomen est omen: The volume of the pots is 750 and 1100 millilitres respectively. This makes them large enough to store a cooker, cartridge and pot holder inside.
Thanks to a wall thickness of just 0.3 millimetres, the pots weigh just 60 and 62 grams respectively - the lightweight heart leaps for joy! Despite their record weight, they should be sturdy enough for tough outdoor use. One pot costs 54.90 or 69.90 euros.
Titanium is a fascinating material: light, high-quality and with an unmistakable, robust finish. Whether it's screws, frames or wedding rings: I love titanium! The unique properties of this lightweight metal are of course also ideal for bikepacking. Just like many other bikepackers, I like travelling with light luggage. That way, I can still ride sportily despite having panniers on my bike, cover some distance and maybe even turn into a trail. Titanium cookware promises a long service life despite its low weight and experience has shown that it also makes a good gift for a bike buddy. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE editor
