Mountain bikes, especially e-mountain bikes, are not only used for sport and leisure. More and more bikers are also using their expensive bikes as a means of transport in everyday life. For some, this means putting a rucksack on their back, getting on the saddle and off to the office or the supermarket. Others equip their bikes elaborately for everyday use: with mudguards and pannier racks.
If you want to leave your sports bike as a sports bike, but still want to use it occasionally as a means of transport, you can also attach a trailer to your bike. However, these are often heavy, bulky and not very safe to ride. It is precisely these problem areas that the young start-up Veolo has been working on. The team spent two years working on a trailer that was just as suitable for everyday use as it was for leisure activities and was intended to be more versatile and sportier than the existing products on the market.
Thanks to its closed, high-strength aluminium frame, progressively damped independent suspension, low weight of just 8.5 kilos and low centre of gravity, the Veolo Cargo is said to have outstanding handling characteristics. The manufacturer promises unique driving dynamics even at high speeds, on bends and even on unpaved roads: "While other bicycle trailers can start to sway, especially at higher speeds, the Veolo Cargo's low centre of gravity, wide track and combination with the damped independent suspension ensure a smooth and confident ride on any surface. With the highly functional, robust body for transporting heavy and large loads, a wide variety of goods weighing up to 80 kilos can be moved."
That's right, you can load an impressive 80 kilos into the Veolo Cargo - enough for a month's shopping at the drinks shop as well as a trip to the lake with a stand-up paddleboard or dinghy. Practical: Matching bag systems and a comprehensive range of accessories make it easy to use in urban traffic, as well as on bike and adventure trips. The lightweight plug-in mechanism, which allows you to dismantle and stow away in two simple steps, ensures the best possible space optimisation when stowing away in the cellar, at home or when transporting by car or train.
The Leipzig-based start-up also focuses on sustainability. This means localisation, socially responsible production and durability. The individual parts are produced in Europe, while storage, assembly and dispatch take place in Leipzig - with short distances and fair working conditions. To minimise the consumption of resources, all parts of the trailer can be replaced or repaired.
From 2 November 2023 to 17 December 2023, customers were able to pre-order the Veolo Cargo on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. As soon as the campaign goal of 89,000 euros was reached, the Veolo Cargo cargo trailer went into series production. Deliveries to pre-order customers began in April 2024 and the trailer has been sold via the Veolo online shop ever since. The Veolo Cargo regularly costs 790 euros. According to the manufacturer, it was offered at particularly favourable conditions during the campaign period. Veolo also offers trailers for transporting dogs.
