Between resistance and collaboration - by Étienne Bonamy
In the middle of the war summer of 1942, the German occupying forces and the French collaborators launched the "Circuit de France". It was intended as a kind of Tour de France, which had not taken place since 1940. From 28 September to 4 October, 72 riders from France, Belgium and Italy set off on the 1,650-kilometre route in six stages. Designed in a hurry, it was a round trip from Paris to Paris, through a France divided by the demarcation line.
Anyone who has ever ridden a bike knows that nothing in life is flat. - René Fallet, franc. Writer (1927 - 1983)
The riders lacked everything during this improvised "tour de force": material, food and, above all, motivation. One of them was Émile Idée, one of the best French cyclists at the time. Étienne Bonamy tells his story and that of the other competitors in a moving way. He describes a race that took place between resistance and collaboration, the black market and blackmail, personal and political interests, occupied and free zones. A multi-faceted novel that captures the politics of the era and the role of sport and the press in an authoritarian regime.
Heinz Stücke. 51 years of non-stop cycling. 648,000 kilometres. 196 countries. - by Carina Wolfram and Heinz Stücke (photographer)
What is it like to spend your entire adult life on the road? Heinz Stücke from Hövelhof has experienced it. He was 22 years old when he left his home village in East Westphalia with his saddlebags packed and 73 when he returned for the first time. The incredible story of a nomadic life. Heinz Stücke travelled the world by bike for 51 years.
He covered an incredible 648,000 kilometres and saw all 196 countries in the world. At 18, Stücke circumnavigated the Mediterranean, signed on as a sailor on a ship and secretly went ashore on the Russian coast to cycle to Moscow and Vladivostok. He was repeatedly arrested by the militia and sent westwards on a train, but he always got off and travelled his own way through the Soviet Union.
Heinz Stücke told these and many other stories in long conversations with author Carina Wolfram, resulting in a book about an almost unbelievable life on the road.
