When you think of a cargo bike, this category often comes to mind first. Three-wheeled cargo bikes à la Christiania, Babboe and Bakfiets offer plenty of space for kids or luggage and cannot fall over when stationary, even when loaded. Unfortunately, the classic Babboe cargo bike has been criticised for safety problems in the meantime. However, the problems mainly occurred with the brand's Long Johns and are said to have been rectified in the meantime. Babboe's cargo tricycles, which are much more present in the public eye, were not affected by the frame breakages. The Dutch manufacturer Vogue also recently had to recall its cargo bikes due to safety problems.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel. That's good, because the bikes from Babboe to Bakfiets are very popular. The practical benefits are undeniably high. The cargo tricycles cut a fine figure, especially on shorter journeys, and score points with their good overview, ample storage space and high payload. However, riding with the widespread turntable steering takes a lot of getting used to. You have to take bends slowly.
The Christiania is the original cargo trike from Denmark. It has been around for ages with and without a motor and in all possible equipment variants. The basic version without an engine and without gears offers extremely reduced technology, but makes a relatively low weight and a low entry-level price possible.
The Chike is fighting the cliché of sluggish cargo tricycles. With tilting technology, the bike can lean into a bend while still offering the advantages of high stability and load capacity. The biggest disadvantage is that the complex technology is rather heavy and expensive, depending on the version. The front body is somewhat less flexible between luggage and kids transport. However, the front cab can also be swapped for a cargo solution if required.
In addition to a longtail and a long john, the bicycle giant now also offers a trike, covering all the main types of cargo bike. Exciting: The loading area is at the rear, the main frame can lean into the bend. A total weight of up to 220 kg is possible, with the rear carrying 60 kilograms.
Multi-track cargo bikes are particularly recommended for transporting heavy loads or several children over short distances. They are less suitable for long journeys. Due to the heavy weight, a parking space at ground level is a must. - Adrian Kaether, Test Manager MYBIKE
