Cargo bikes are big and bulky? Muli shows that this doesn't have to be the case. The Cologne-based company's trademark is the foldable basket in the front of the classic Long John design. It is simply locked and unlocked with a locking latch. The handle can also be used to lock the basket with a classic U-lock. When folded, the Muli with its small wheels takes up hardly any more space than a normal bike. Strong riders can even climb a few steps with the unloaded Muli.
Our Muli Motor EU test bike is particularly finely equipped with almost exclusively European parts. The frame is made in Cologne, entirely from recycled steel. Unusual for a cargo bike is the compact shape and the wide gear range of the 3x3 gear hub from the Swabian Alb. It can be operated intuitively via the e-trigger and shifts into a practical starting gear when stationary. Under load, however, it bangs a little. Other e-gear shifters do this better in some cases. The brand-new Bosch system with quiet motor and Kiox display is excellent, and the battery with 545 watt hours is sufficient for the lightweight mule in the city.
The handlebar and saddle height can be adjusted with quick-release levers, but the Muli is rather compact. In keeping with the short wheelbase, the Muli is very lively and almost a little nervous without a load. With a week's shopping in the cargo area, the bike rolls noticeably more smoothly. A Eurobox in the standard 60 x 40 format also fits in the basket, which can be loaded up to a maximum of 70 kilos. The optional pannier rack (130 euros) for additional panniers is a practical feature. Additional accessories are available for transporting children, against rain or for dogs. The chassis of the Muli is rigid, but the spring support provides the driver with some comfort. Passengers and cargo, on the other hand, are shaken a little during transport.
The Muli cuts a super figure as a particularly compact and lightweight cargo bike. Due to the system, it does not have maximum lifting power or comfort, but it is versatile, space-saving when parked and very well thought-out overall. Perhaps not everyone needs the elegant features of the limited edition European model, but the powerful new Bosch motor is a clear argument in its favour. - Barbara Merz-Weigandt, Editor-in-Chief MYBIKE
