Decathlon's own brand B'TWIN presents the Discover 900, a 14-inch children's bike with pedals that can be removed without tools. The 2-in-1 bike is designed to enable a seamless transition from balance bike to bicycle. In typical Decathlon fashion, the price is really fair and the weight remains low. We have all the information.

The aluminium frame gives the bike a weight of 5.6 kg. The patented Stop Easy brake system offers 30 per cent more braking power than conventional levers. The saddle height can be adjusted between 40.5 and 51.5 cm and the handlebars by 4 cm. The bike is designed for children aged 3 to 5 years with a height of 90 to 110 cm and costs 199.99 euros >> available here.

The Discover 900 from B'TWIN is a balance bike and first bike in one. Thanks to this 2-in-1 concept, where the crank and pedals can be fitted without tools, it only takes 10 seconds to switch between balance bike and bicycle. The idea behind it: Children first train their balance in balance bike mode before they start riding a real bike with the pedals fitted.

Low weight and low entry

The frame is made of aluminium and the whole bike is said to weigh 5.6 kg. Normal wheels for children are of course much lighter. But the Discover 900 already has front and rear brakes on board. This allows children to get used to braking with their hands while still in balance bike mode. This is the case with very few balance bikes. The low-spanning shape with low entry makes it easier to get on. Children can put their feet on the ground without bumping into the frame. Reflectors between the spokes and on the pedals increase visibility. A bell is also included as standard.

The patented Stop Easy braking system works with V-brakes. The ergonomic brake levers are arranged parallel to the handlebars and, according to Decathlon, develop 30 per cent more braking force than standard levers. The progressive function enables controlled braking.

The saddle height can be adjusted between 40.5 and 51.5 cm. This corresponds to a body height of 90 to 110 cm. The handlebar is also height-adjustable by 4 cm. This allows the bike to grow with the rider. The Discover 900 is approved for a maximum load of 30 kg. Optional training wheels can be fitted if required.

Tip from the BIKE editorial team: Children who are already training their balance on a balance bike usually learn to ride a bike quickly. Training wheels are rather counterproductive here.

The Discover 900 is available in clover green and begonia pink. Yellow elements characterise the functions for learning to ride a bike: brake levers and removable pedals. A lifetime guarantee applies to the frame, stem and handlebars. Attachments have a 2-year guarantee.

Assessment by the BIKE editorial team

The price for the Discover 900* is really fair and the design is well thought out. The quick change between wheel and pedal mode is practical, as it is not easy to judge the right time to jump onto the first real bike. In addition, the little ones can do their first pedalling exercises on a familiar vehicle - that helps. Compared to other balance bikes, however, the 2-in-1 solution is heavy - and experience has shown that parents can sometimes carry balance bikes for longer distances or transport them on a rucksack.
