Lidl rises with the Crivit Light 20 inch enters the lightweight children's bike segment. The 20-inch aluminium bike is said to weigh just 7.6 kilograms, measured without attachments such as mudguards or lights. By comparison, established manufacturers such as Woom position their models in the lightweight segment with similar weight specifications, but charge significantly higher prices. The Woom Go 4 weighs around 7.8 kilograms and costs 549 euros. The difference of 300 euros makes the Crivit model an alternative for price-conscious families.
The technical equipment is based on components from well-known brands. The Shimano Tourney gears offer seven gears and belong to the Japanese manufacturer's entry-level range. It is often found on children's bikes and inexpensive adult models. The twist grips installed here are designed to make it particularly easy for children to use the gears.
The tyres are from Schwalbe. The Little Joe in size 20 x 1.4 inch is also used by other manufacturers. It has proven to be a solid all-rounder in practice and is a good choice for everyday use on the way to school, visiting friends or a stroll through town with the family. The Little Joe is equipped with a reflective strip for increased safety in road traffic.
The brake handles can be adjusted in grip width, which should enable operation for different hand sizes. The length of the grips is designed for braking with two fingers, which enables safe handling and reliable stopping for young speedsters.
The BMX handlebars can be adjusted in height and angle and the seat post can be adjusted without tools using a quick release. These adjustment options are designed to make the bike suitable for children between 115 and 130 centimetres tall. Lidl specifies the age range as five to eight years. This is standard for 20-inch children's bikes and is also recommended by Woom for the Go 4, for example. Only with Kubikes can kids switch to 20-inch bikes a little earlier. According to the manufacturer, the Kubikes 20S is suitable from a height of 105 centimetres.
An ergonomic children's saddle is part of Crivit's standard equipment. A kickstand and bell are also included in the set. Here too, Lidl is ahead of the competition. The bell and kickstand are only available as optional accessories from the competition. The bike is delivered 98 per cent pre-assembled, only small parts such as pedals, reflectors or handlebars still need to be fitted.
From 12 March, the Crivit Light 20-inch children's bike will be available in all German Lidl shops and in the Online shop available. The regular price is 249 euros. Users of the Lidl Plus app pay 199 euros.
The children's bike market is hotly contested and is currently dominated by brands such as Woom, Kubikes and Puky. They all offer 20-inch models that weigh less than eight kilos (in the standard version). Prices, on the other hand, have soared in recent years. The oil crisis seems almost harmless. The lightweight children's bikes are not available for less than 500 euros. That's why they are traded like diamonds in the rough on the second-hand market.
The new Crivit Light 20-inch children's bike should be a breath of fresh air on the market and put the competition under a lot of pressure. For 249 euros, the children's bike from Lidl is a real bargain. Shimano gears, Schwalbe tyres and a weight of just 7.6 kilos - the competition can hardly do better. The fact that Lidl has obviously copied the design from the competition in Austria should only bother a few people.
