The Basque manufacturer is launching a comprehensive product line for the next generation on the market. The name Kimu means "shoot" or "bud" in Basque. The bike family is divided into two categories: Learning for beginners and Development for advanced young riders.
The Kimu 16 accompanies children from 3 to 6 years of age. It starts out as a balance bike with special brake levers designed to teach children how to use the brakes. As soon as the child brakes safely and starts moving, the footrest can be replaced with cranks and pedals. The conversion takes place without training wheels.
A stabiliser between the frame and fork prevents the handlebars from turning too far. The elastic handlebar stop gently returns the handlebars to the centre position. To extend the service life, a second, longer seat post is included. The pre-mounted protectors on the wheel can be customised with stickers and a nameplate is also included.
The development category comprises three model variants with different wheel sizes. The Kimu 20 is suitable for children aged 5 to 8, the Kimu 24 for 7 to 10-year-olds and the Kimu 27 for 9 to 12-year-olds. Each wheel size is available in different equipment variants.
The Kimu 20 H10 and Kimu 24 H10 focus on low weight. The H20 versions use an aluminium fork for stable handling. The Kimu 24 H10 TR, Kimu 27 H10 and Kimu 27 H20 come with MTB components such as suspension forks and dropper posts for trail use.
All Development models are already equipped with hydraulic disc brakes. Short cranks, customised grips and special saddles take children's body proportions into account. The gear levers are designed to move smoothly. A stem that grows with the child extends the service life over several years.
Orbea's Big Wheel concept relies on proportionally larger wheels, comparable to 29-inch wheels for adults. The larger wheels are intended to ensure better-natured handling and more stability. The rear derailleurs are short and positioned in a protected position with sufficient ground clearance.
The frames are made of aluminium. The cables are routed internally. Protectors protect the frame from damage. The construction is designed to withstand the falls and knocks that occur in children's everyday lives.
All Kimu models can be customised. Two sets of interchangeable protectors with different designs are included. Like the Kimu 16, the Kimu 20 comes with stickers and a name plate. The entire Kimu family is available now.
