The Qio AP-8R in this test is a compact e-bike, can carry a large payload and rolls incredibly smoothly. However, it is not a cargo bike in the conventional sense. So why is it in our comparison?

Topics in this article

The first few metres are a revelation. The compact bike sits so firmly on the road that it feels more like a moped than a bicycle. This is not only due to the extremely rigid frame - the bike has a permissible total weight of 180 kilos - but also to the outrageously wide 62 millimetre Conti tyres. With the right tyre pressure, they even roll comfortably over cobblestones. The steering geometry is perfectly matched to the city and this tyre size - the bike rolls confidently and remains so even when loaded. Here you get manoeuvrability with a fun factor despite really good directional stability. The seating position on the bike, which can be easily and very quickly adjusted to suit the whole family thanks to the Speedlifter stem, is striking: the seat length is relatively long, and if you're under 1.80 metres tall, you're more likely to sit in a sporty position than upright.

Qio Eins AP-8R: Wide range of applications

The whole appearance makes a very clean impression: the motor and the cleanly crafted aluminium frame fit together visually as if from a single mould, the whole bike looks like an accurate drawing, even if the welding beads have not been polished. The Active Line motor from Bosch provides the necessary support; fully loaded, the 50 Newton metres of torque can be a little tight on steep climbs, but the little one is generally easy to handle. This is also due to the Nexus eight-speed hub gears, which harmonise well. However, there should be no fewer gears for transporting luggage.

The Qio is not really a cargo bike, but a way of transporting heavier loads on a very versatile bike. A child seat is permitted on the stable system carrier with MIK-HD system - and much more is possible: from the large transport box to different sized baskets and panniers, everything can be quickly attached to the system. The Qio frame bag is available for small items such as a rain jacket, keys and wallet. The front carrier can hold an unexpected 15 kilos - even in most of the containers mentioned, which are just as easily clicked on here. The Qio costs 3499 euros (or 3826.65 euros with our equipment) - a reasonable price for a small cargo bike with enormous potential.

Conclusion on the compact cargo bike Qio One AP-8R

The motor power is sufficient for regions up to the foothills of the Alps, everything else is almost ideal if you are looking for a small family bike with riding culture for loads below DIY store size.
