We went in search of the most beautiful gravel bikes on the market - and found them. These are our top 10 best gravel bikes currently on sale. Spoiler: There are 5 real Italians and one fake - Germany in the lead!

As we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But somehow it's not. Margot Robbie, for example, was once again voted one of the most beautiful women in the world - and no one would argue with that, would they?

Aesthetics is far more than a mere surface - it determines whether something leaves us cold or electrifies us. Of course, beauty is subjective: it is fuelled by personal preferences, experiences and emotions. What is timelessly elegant for one person may seem boring to another. And yet there are proportions, harmony, materiality or precision craftsmanship that we astonishingly often perceive as "beautiful" - regardless of individual taste.

We scoured the web and looked for the best gravel bikes on the market - and found them, we think.

From 10th to 1st place, price was not a factor in our selection. Weights and prices are generally based on the model shown - this is not always the top model.

10th place: Simple beauty: Cube Nuroad One

10th place goes to the simple and elegant Nuroad One from industry giant Cube. Cube was inspired by racing and cyclocross bikes when developing the frame.

The colour is called "ruby'n'puce". It sounds like an indie duo from Berlin, but it's a pretty successful mixture of deep ruby red and dark, brownish violet. Somewhere between teacup colour and 50s bathroom. We particularly liked the mix of understated colour and the purist frame shape. The aluminium frame houses a full carbon fork. And now hold on tight: The whole thing is available for 899 euros. A real entry-level model that proves that you don't necessarily have to traumatise your piggy bank for a nice gravel bike. Weight: 11.3 kilos (manufacturer's specification). Price: 899 euros >> at Liquid Life or Bicycle XXL available.

9th place: Corduroy trousers revolutionary: Fahrrad Manufaktur GX-500

9th place goes to vsf fahrradmanufaktur. Behind the somewhat unwieldy name lies an idealistic story: "Association of self-managed bicycle businesses" - an association of independent dealers who at some point decided that they no longer wanted to put up with mediocre quality. You can think of it as a small bicycle revolution in corduroy trousers. The label from Oldenburg produces in Germany. And if we're honest: You can see it. This frame doesn't pretend to have racing ambitions. Sporty? Not safe. Classic? And how.

In any case, we see in our mind's eye the teacher Dr Specht (Robert Atzorn) - grey-modelled hair, leather bag, a quiet clearing of the throat - as he gracefully turns the corner into the schoolyard. You don't know Dr Specht? Then you're too young for this bike.

The GX500 is available in no less than 14 colours. Weight: 11.7 kilos. The price is 2,399.90 euros >> e.g. available here at a reduced price. Perhaps a bike for life. And for the school playground.

8th place: Italo-Futurist: Pinarello Dogma GR

8th place belongs to traditional Italian nobility: Pinarello rolls into the ranking with the Dogma - and of course it doesn't just do that, it stages itself. The manufacturer itself speaks of the perfect blend of the speed of the Dogma F and the off-road power of the Crossista and Dogma XC. In other words: tarmac diva meets gravel gladiator.

However, you won't find the classic charm of our pitches 10 and 9 here. The Dogma is not a bike that you lean against the wall of a half-timbered house to admire with a cappuccino. It's more like a mixture of shower gel advert and high-tech tinned food opener - in a good way. Everything looks well-designed, aerodynamically tapered. That slightly humped top tube? No coincidence, but attitude. The aggressive fork? Calculation with style.

The carbon fibre runabout impressively demonstrates that the Italians are not only good at espresso and opera, but also at elegant futurism. Where others look like science fiction, the Dogma looks like haute couture on two wheels. Weight? A feather-light 7.3 kilos. Price? We won't tell you to avoid circulation problems. No kidding: the good piece costs 14,000 euros. Building society contracts are overrated anyway. After all, you only live once. Let's go!

7th place: Coloured pencil vandalism: Cinelli King Zydeco 2

Seventh place is also in Italian hands. Cinelli, founded by Cino Cinelli in Milan in 1948, is famous for its iconic frames and avant-garde graphic designs. The King Zydeco 2 remains true to this credo: carbonised, faster, sportier - but still with Italian charm.

And yes, we admit it: it wasn't so much the classic design language of the frame that catapulted the bike into our top 10, but the playful graphic design. Simple? Ha! More like an explosion of colour. If Pippi Longstocking had ridden fast gravel bikes, she would probably have picked up the King Zydeco straight away. Fast frame meets coloured pencil vandalism - and somehow it works fantastically.

The bike is available in a number of other designs, so there is guaranteed to be something for every colour taste. Frame weight: 1,130 grams. Price: 5,700 euros.

6th place: Rose Backroad FF

The fast race gravel bike from Bocholt rolls into 6th place: the Backroad FF. It wants two things - speed and gravel - at the same time. The "gracer" (yes, pun on gravel and racer) with its slim one-piece cockpit already has plenty of test medals hanging from its top tube and proves, as is typical for mail-order bikes, that chic doesn't always have to be expensive.

There are plenty of colours: "Sweet Plum" and "Dirty Lemon" are new to the range. But the most polarising variant? Quite clearly: "Rotten Candy". Candy pink meets penis veins or whatever it's supposed to be - vulgar, provocative, anything but timeless, but catchy. Anyone who sees this bike will look twice.

Whatever the colour, the frame remains fast, simple and discreetly futuristic. The Backroad FF is available in many different models; here we present the FF GRX RX825 Di2 version: 4,800 euros, 8.2 kilos according to the manufacturer >> available here.

5th place: Impulsive Italian: Bianchi Impulso RC

Another Italian rolls into the ranking: the cult manufacturer Bianchi. This label also comes from Milan - the city where many fine things have their origins. Unlike Cinelli or Pinarello, however, Bianchi has been around a little longer: founded in 1885, with a CV full of top places in the Tour de France.

But Bianchi doesn't just make an impression in sporty terms. The striking "Celeste" colour - that legendary turquoise-greenish hue that many people think of as blue - makes it instantly recognisable. Like Yeti with mountain bikes: you see it, you recognise it, you want it.

The frame of the Impulso RC impresses with its clear lines: consistent, resilient and demanding propulsion. Extravagances? Not a thing. Only the black lettering on the down tube is a subtle reminder of whose name is emblazoned on two wheels. In contrast to the adventurer Bianchi Arcadex the Impulso RC wants one thing: to be fast, sporty, impulsive - and it likes to do this off-road. Of course, the bike is also available in other colours. But let's be honest: who dreams of a Ferrari in a yellow colour? Price: 6590 euros. Weight: from 8.1 kilos.

4th place: Fake Italian: Cervélo Áspero

What, another Italian? The name at least sounds like espresso and gesticulating passion. But Cervélo actually comes from North America - founded and conceived in Montreal in 1995. Wikipedia explains the name as follows: "Cervello" (brain) and "Vélo" (bicycle). The result is Cervélo: brains on two wheels.

Cervélo is known for its uncompromisingly aerodynamic carbon frames - and the Canadians have also applied this brand essence to their 2019 Áspero gravel bike. Wind tunnel instead of wine cellar. The low-set chainstays are striking - as if the bike had pulled in its shoulders. Otherwise: clear lines, fast trains, lots of understatement. No dolce vita, no riot of colour - rather the quiet self-confidence of a model student in the wind tunnel. Price: 6,799 euros. Weight: from 7.9 kilos (manufacturer's specification).

3rd place: Patriot: Wilier Rave

When talking about Italian racing bike DNA, you can't get past Wilier Triestina. Founded in 1906 in Bassano del Grappa, the name stands for over 100 years of passion on two wheels. "Wilier" goes back to "W l'Italia liberata e redenta" - a patriotic motto that today stands above all for speed, style and character. Road bike meets off-road: out comes the Wilier Rave. This thing screams speed. For strolling around the lake or travelling from Munich to the Baltic Sea - not with the Rave.

The Rave is a racing bike with gravel DNA - Italian elegance with state-of-the-art carbon technology. Wilier manages to combine this design in such a way that you just want to look at the bike. And then ride it. Fast. Surprisingly. Despite its race orientation, the Rave can take a tyre width of up to 52 millimetres. For us in the top 3 of the most beautiful gravel bikes on the market. Price: 9900 (from 4400 euros), weight: 7.9 kilos (manufacturer's specification).

2nd place: Striking connection: Basso Palta 3

If a racing bike could wear a customised suit, it would probably come from Basso. The traditional Italian brand was founded in 1977 by Alcide Basso in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Fans like to say that a Basso is less a means of transport than a matter of style on wheels - fast enough for an attack on the mountain, elegant enough for the cappuccino afterwards, where you happen to be leaning casually against the bar.

The now third generation of the Palta has been given a storage compartment. The new Palta 3 has the streamlined silhouette of an aerodynamically designed road racer, but doesn't look at all sleek. On the contrary: the look has something pleasantly brute. Espresso meets explosiveness

Aerodynamic? Yes. Consistently sleek and fast looking? Not necessarily. The high rim flanks in combination with the voluminous tyres create a kind of contradictory aesthetic - like a Ruhrpott backyard footballer in a Bayern jersey. Sounds more critical than it is meant to be. Perhaps this little break in style is precisely what gives the Palta 3 its special sparkle. It's not a slick, sleek beauty, but an actor with character and a smile on his face. Weight: 8.4 kilos, price: 6699 euros. (from 4299 euros to 8499 euros).

1st place: Batmobile: Bike Ahead Superfast

Beautiful, chic, super fast - the Würzburg-based carbon manufacturer Bike Ahead Composites proves with the Superfast that compromises sometimes lead to the top without compromise. It wasn't just a few engineers who worked on this bike, but a whole community. Fans were allowed to help decide: Cable routing, details, cockpit. High-end is rarely more democratic.

The black beauty is neither classic nor futuristic - more like something between a cat of prey in the air and a stealth fighter. Lacquer? Not a chance. Instead, a matt, shimmering carbon look. Raw, honest, intentional - also a wish of the community, by the way.

And then there are these wheels: the six-spoke monocoque Bike Ahead Biturbo Gravel Aero. They look like they were designed by an Airbus engineer. The frame, fork and cockpit merge into a technical and visual unit - everything interlocks, nothing seems random. If gravel bikes had already existed in Batman's day, he would probably have gone for the Superfast and left the Batmobile behind. So much attention to detail, so little weight, so much independent aesthetics - that has to be rewarded. 1st place, price: from 7549 euros (up to 13,499 euros), weight: from 6.85 kilos.
