High speed meets maintenance-free: With the NOVA GTN, Cylan Cycles presents a powerful S-pedelec for commuters. The combination of Bosch power and the robust 3X3 NINE gear hub promises maximum reliability at up to 45 km/h.

Cylan Cycles equips the NOVA GTN S-pedelec with the 3X3 NINE gear hub. The manufacturer is therefore fully committed to Swabian power: with the combination of a powerful Bosch drive and low-maintenance shifting technology from Adelmannsfelden, near Stuttgart.

S-pedelecs travel at speeds of up to 45 km/h and put the drivetrain under high stress. Powerful motors and daily use in commuter traffic require durable components. The 3X3 NINE was developed to meet these requirements. The encapsulated gear hub is designed to impress with its robust construction and precise gear changes. The maintenance effort remains low.

Motor and battery

The NOVA GTN uses the Bosch Performance Line Speed motor generation 5, which supports speeds of up to 45 km/h and delivers a maximum torque of 100 Nm. The combination with the 3X3 NINE should result in a resilient and low-maintenance drive system. The integrated Bosch PowerTube battery holds 800 Wh for a long range.

The gear hub

The nine gears of the new 3X3 NINE hub gear offer a gear range of 554 per cent. This is made possible by a planetary gear inside the hub. The gear steps are 23.76 per cent. Shifting under load and when stationary should also be possible with the NINE. 3X3 puts the efficiency at 98 per cent. And thanks to the grease lubrication, the gearbox is said to be completely maintenance-free - there is no need to change the oil and the sealed system keeps dirt away from the gearbox.

According to the manufacturer, the NINE has already run 50,000 kilometres on test benches without any problems. The hub weighs two kilograms, can withstand up to 250 Nm of input torque and is compatible with powerful e-bike motors. The NINE is suitable for various rear triangle standards and works with chains and Gates Carbon Drive belts. It accepts 135 millimetre quick-release skewers and thru-axles in 12 x 142 and 12 x 148 millimetre Boost. Brake discs between 160 and 220 millimetres in diameter are possible.

Kilian Schoch, Head of Engineering at Cylan Cycles, explains the choice of gear hub: "Our aim with the NOVA GTN was to develop an S-pedelec that works reliably every day - in all weathers and on long commutes. With the 3X3 NINE, we have found a gear hub that handles the power of the Bosch Performance Line Speed motor with ease and is also particularly low-maintenance."

Equipment variants and use

Hydraulic disc brakes provide deceleration. The equipment is designed for everyday suitability and comfort. The NOVA GTN is designed for fast commutes and sporty everyday rides. The NOVA LOW variant offers a lower entry. The models are each available in two versions: with mechanical gears for €5,999 and with electronic gears for €6,499.

Conclusion

Cylan serves a niche market with the Nova GTN. This is because S-pedelecs are not considered bicycles, but rather Mopeds and are therefore subject to special regulations: minimum age 16 years, compulsory driving licence (category AM/small motorbikes), compulsory helmet and insurance. They must also have rear-view mirrors and lights. The Cylan is therefore particularly suitable for long commuter journeys, but less so for city centres, because: Cycle paths are taboo, S-Pedelecs may only be ridden on roads. The combination of the powerful Bosch Performance Line Speed with the 3X3 Nine gear hub is logical. This is because maintenance plays a particularly important role when it comes to high forces and long distances at high speed.
