Super ventilation and yet a firm fit? The Vaude Trailcontrol+ 20 touring backpack aims to combine two properties that are actually mutually exclusive. To achieve this, Vaude has given the environmentally friendly MTB backpack a clever back system. Our test shows what else the Trailcontrol+ has to offer.

Topics in this article

Vaude presented the brand new Trailcontrol 20+ at the last Eurobike and immediately won a Eurobike Green Award. The Tettnang-based company deliberately focussed on particularly environmentally friendly materials and responsible production methods. But the real highlight of the new touring backpack is hidden on the back.

The so-called Aeroflex Control System allows you to switch between a ventilation mode with increased ventilation and a contact mode for a secure fit on the descent without having to take off the rucksack.

We tested these 9 mountain bike backpacks:

Furthermore, the back can be easily adjusted in length. Vaude relies on tried and tested features: wide hip fins - unfortunately with only one pocket - ergonomically shaped shoulder straps and a classic division into a main compartment and tool compartment. In addition to a hydration tube clip and goggle holder, a rain cover is also hidden in the bottom compartment.

Well-structured layout, but dark lining

The Trailcontrol is classically divided into a main compartment and a tool compartment, with neither compartment opening completely. You also have to unclip the compression strap before opening it.

The tool compartment is clearly organised and labelled with small icons for the respective use. If you stick to it, this helps you to find the tools, as the lining is completely black - not quite ideal. However, everything has its own place.

In addition to the less frequently used items, the hydration bladder also needs to be stowed in the large main compartment. An additional compartment is used to store keys and valuables. Apart from a few small items, the Vaude is well structured and thoughtfully organised.

A full face can be attached to the compression strap, and the pads can be stored in the side pockets if necessary. We would have liked a second pocket on the hip belt and a double zip on the tool compartment. With only one zip, you always have to open the compartment completely to access the contents. The drinking tube can also only be fed out of the rucksack on one side.

High wearing comfort and innovative back system

With its special back system, the Trailcontrol combines the best of both worlds: On the descent, it offers the stable and close fit of a contact back, while on the ascent it offers the significantly better ventilation of a stretched mesh back. Switching between the settings using two loops on each side is intuitive and easy to do while riding - but the system doesn't hook in reliably every time you use it. However, the change is clearly noticeable on the back. On the uphill, the back is pleasantly cooled, on the downhill, the load is closer and more compact and therefore safer on the back.

The stable fit is further enhanced by the wide and stable hip fins. With the Trailcontrol, even rough descents are possible without the rucksack swinging up or slipping down your neck - bravo. The shoulder straps and hip wings are ergonomically shaped and sufficiently padded to prevent pressure points. The narrow strap ends can only pinch a little at the lower rib arches.

Conclusion - Vaude Trailcontrol+ 20

The Vaude can be adjusted between contact and mesh back using a system of loops. This ensures top ventilation on uphill climbs and, in conjunction with the extended hip wings, a snug fit even on technical descents. Ergonomically shaped and adequately padded, it is also comfortable to wear. The compartments are well structured but darkly lined. Overall, the Trailcontrol is an excellent all-round backpack.
