90 years of Suunto: From precision compass to high-tech adventure watch. Vohlonen laid the foundation with the development of a liquid-filled compass - more robust, more accurate and better suited to the harsh conditions of the north.
After his death, his wife Elli Vohlonen continued to run the company and laid the foundations for Suunto's reputation as a manufacturer of reliable instruments for adventurers. Finnish virtues such as restraint, endurance and clear design have run through every product ever since.
Suunto has always set technological standards. In 1965, the company discovered that its own compasses also worked reliably underwater - the starting signal for specialised diving instruments. The Suunto Spyder, the world's first dive computer in watch format, followed in 1997.
Another milestone was the Suunto Vector, launched in 1998: as the first so-called ABC watch with an altimeter, barometer and compass, it defined a completely new product category and became an icon of the outdoor scene. Suunto was also an early pioneer in the GPS segment - for example with the G9, which already offered functions that were clearly ahead of their time in the early 2000s.
In addition to navigation and hardware, Suunto also characterised the digital training sector early on. Functions such as heat maps, free offline maps and sport-specific analysis tools created orientation and structure for endurance and outdoor athletes. With platforms such as SuuntoSports.com, Movescount and later SuuntoPlus, the brand involved its community at an early stage - long before networking became the standard.
To celebrate its 90th anniversary on 10 March 2026, Suunto is launching a limited edition of the Suunto Vertical 2 Titanium on the market. The watch, limited to 1936 pieces, is based on the iconic design of the Vector in striking yellow and black - reinterpreted for Suunto's most powerful adventure watch to date. Tradition meets high-tech.
