In late summer 2025, a new gravel event will be launched with a very special and unique backdrop: The Ewald Colliery, a coal mine in Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia, which was shut down in 2001, will be the venue for the newly founded "Gravel Ground" with title sponsor Maxxis. From the 26 to 28 September 2025 the former colliery site will become the epicentre of the gravel scene. In addition to various races and tours, a whole host of additional activities are planned. Against the impressive backdrop of the former colliery site, this promises to be an exciting event with a difference. "With the new 'Gravel Ground', we want to give the scene a home and at the same time present the latest trends from the industry together with strong partners," says Janina Schmitz from the organiser's event management team.
The focus of the "Gravel Ground" is clearly on biking on the site of the former colliery. The various routes lead through the fascinating landscape and historic relics from the coal mining era. Routes are planned for gravel beginners as well as for experienced gravel bikers. In addition, various workshops and talks by experts will provide new knowledge about gravel bikes, equipment and riding techniques; more than 50 well-known brands will be represented at the associated expo to present the latest bikes and equipment, which can be tried out and tested on the event site.
Live music, local gastronomy and a relaxed atmosphere round off the event at the Ewald colliery. If you want to spend the whole weekend there, you will also find attractive camping and glamping options. Ewald Colliery is located in the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and is easy to reach by bus and train via Herne or Recklinghausen and via the A2, A42 and A43 motorways.
