Mahle X20 firmware update: hub motor now with 65 Nm torque
Mahle SmartBike Systems has improved its X20 rear hub motor with a firmware update: the new software mobilises 20 percent more torque (65 Nm) and a 10 percent higher peak power of now 275 watts. The system weighs just 1.4 kilograms.

Mahle SmartBike Systems is making its powerful rear hub motors even more powerful. The manufacturer is presenting the revised version of its X20 e-bike motor. Riders who already own an X20 bike will gradually gain access to the performance enhancements via firmware updates over the course of 2025.

New bikes are now being equipped with the more powerful unit. With 65 Nm of torque and 275 watts of peak power at a weight of 1.4 kilograms - lighter than most hub gears - faster acceleration and better climbing ability should be achieved.

Firmware updates for existing customers

Owners of X20 bikes will receive the performance improvements via firmware updates. The gradual distribution therefore takes place via the Mahle software and therefore without hardware replacement.

This upgrade gives riders more options, depending on whether they want more support on hills, a more dynamic feel on flat terrain or simply an overall smoother riding experience. - Jochen Sommer, Managing Director Mahle SmartBike Systems

UDH standard supported

The new hardware generation of the Mahle X20 supports the Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) standard, which is now implemented on many bicycles. This compatibility enables manufacturers to integrate more robust derailleur systems with improved shifting precision. The UDH standard also offers better protection against impacts and reduces maintenance costs.

Thanks to UDH compatibility, bicycle manufacturers can use a wider range of shifting components. The standardised interface simplifies the development and maintenance of drive systems. Mechanics benefit from the standardised mounting for repairs and adjustments.

Areas of application and availability

The revised X20 drive system is equally suitable for road bikes, gravel bikes and urban models. For example in the Mondraker E-gravel bike fleet Dusty and Desiknio and Urwahn, which we tested.
