With the new PD-EH510, Shimano is adding a versatile hybrid pedal to its range that is aimed at riders who appreciate both the efficiency of a clipless system and the freedom of a platform. The pedal combines Shimano's proven SPD binding on one side with a wide platform on the opposite side.

With a size of 111 × 96 millimetres, the platform side offers a generous contact area, which should ensure stability, especially on longer rides. Additional grip is provided by the eight pins on the platform side, which are designed to ensure a secure grip even in adverse conditions.

The dual function makes the PD-EH510 a versatile companion for a wide range of applications: Daily commuting is just as much part of the hybrid pedal's specification as gravel adventures or first off-road excursions on a mountain bike or e-bike.

Robust construction for long-lasting performance

The pedal body of the PD-EH510 is made of a hard-wearing resin material with a textured surface. According to Shimano, this design is intended to provide effective protection against stone chips and abrasion, which are particularly common in off-road use. The flatter profile of the pedal was specially developed to ensure more ground clearance - particularly important in technical terrain, tight bends and obstacles off the beaten track. The plain bearing design is intended to function reliably even under demanding conditions while requiring little maintenance.

Versatile use for different target groups

The new hybrid pedal from Shimano is aimed at a broad target group of cyclists. Commuters in particular are likely to appreciate the flexibility of the PD-EH510, as they can choose between the efficient power transmission of the SPD system and the uncomplicated comfort of the platform side, depending on the situation, route and choice of shoes. For gravel bikers, the pedal offers the option of using the platform side to quickly put the foot down on technical passages or unsafe ground - the same applies to MTB novices for whom the fixed connection of the clipless system still seems too unsafe on technical passages.

Optimum shoe combinations for maximum comfort

Shimano recommends combining the PD-EH510 with shoes from its own GF, EX and ET collections for optimum use. These models are specially designed for versatile use and offer the necessary stiffness for efficient pedalling with the SPD system, while at the same time providing sufficient flexibility and profile for secure grip on the platform side of the pedal. The soles of these shoe models are designed to harmonise perfectly with the SPD binding and also offer sufficient grip on the platform side.
