With the Stealth 3D, PRO has developed a saddle that utilises 3D printing technology for zoned hardness distribution. The Shimano subsidiary uses three different mesh zones with different degrees of density. This design was developed based on pressure measurements during bike fittings and feedback from test riders, as reported by the "UCI".
The hexagonal cell structure of the EPU padding absorbs vibrations individually and collectively. This technology reduces road vibration and thus rider fatigue. The exposed hexagonal cells demonstrate the precision of the 3D printing process and enhance the aerodynamic look of the saddle.
The front area utilises high-density padding for maximum support of the sit bones in an aggressive position. This zone supports the rider's weight when leaning forwards in an aerodynamic position. The centre zone uses lower density and distributes the weight over a larger area in an upright riding position.
The rear area has the lowest density, as riders rarely come into contact with this area when pedalling. This design reduces the overall weight of the saddle and prevents pressure points caused by point loads. The ribbed surface keeps the rider seated even during maximum sprint efforts.
Anton Peeters, Project Lead for saddle design at PRO, explains the advantages of the 3D printing process over conventional EV or PU padding. "The 3D printing process makes it possible to fine-tune the density, which is not possible with conventional padding," says Peeters. The three mesh zones offer more comfort in both aerodynamic and upright positions.
The development is in response to feedback from riders who are prepared to sacrifice weight for more comfort. Peeters emphasises that the Stealth 3D is particularly suitable for riders who ride over cobblestones or poorly maintained asphalt roads. The vibration absorption of the hexagonal cells has a particularly positive effect here.
The carbon fibre-reinforced base combines low weight with high rigidity. The triple bridge design with anatomical relief channel follows the proven Stealth philosophy. The aerodynamic properties are retained despite the 3D padding and support the familiar seating position of the Stealth series.
The ribbed surface of the EPU padding prevents the rider from slipping on the saddle. This structure enables efficient pedalling even under high loads when seated. The saddle is compatible with all PRO saddle accessories and utilises the tried-and-tested mounting system.
PRO offers the Stealth 3D in two construction levels. The Team version uses carbon struts and weighs 224g. The performance version uses INOX stainless steel stays and weighs 260g. Both versions are available in 142mm and 152mm width.
The weight difference of 36g between the variants is mainly due to the strut material. Carbon struts offer similar stiffness values to stainless steel at a lower weight. The width options allow adaptation to different anatomies and sit bone measurements.
The Stealth 3D is aimed at riders who want to combine aerodynamic advantages with increased comfort. Racers on poor road surfaces in particular benefit from the vibration absorption. The three hardness zones support both aggressive time trial positions and more relaxed basic endurance units.
Compatibility with the aerodynamic seating position of the original Stealth series is retained. Riders can benefit from the improved padding without changing their bike fitting parameters. The saddle is equally suitable for road races, time trials and longer training sessions.
