If you commute to work by bike, you need a suitable commuter backpack. It should be waterproof, offer sufficient storage space and ventilate the back well. This is exactly what the multifunctional Proof 22 backpack from Lake Constance label Vaude promises. Vaude from Tettnang stands for sustainable outdoor and bike equipment "Made in Germany". For decades, the brand has combined clever functions with durable materials - whether for day trips, bike commuting or long tours. At Vaude, well thought-out design and suitability for everyday use meet a relaxed, sporty lifestyle.

We took a close look at the Vaude Proof 22 multifunctional backpack.

Vaude Proof 22 multifunctional rucksack: fashionable and functional

Vaude offers a modern, waterproof roll-top rucksack in black. We weren't able to make full use of the stated volume of 22 litres, but we could actually fit around 20 litres - still enough for commuting essentials such as a laptop, notepad, change of clothes, inner tube or pump. The rucksack is "Made in Germany" and, as is typical for Vaude, produced in an environmentally friendly way. In terms of price, it is in the upper third: for the Proof 22 multifunctional rucksack You will need to budget for around 180 euros. It is also available in two other colours.

Bag management: Exemplary!

The tried and tested roll-top method does not work quite as easily as with other models due to the somewhat stiff upper material. Nevertheless, you soon get used to it. Unfortunately, there is only one small zip pocket on the outside. There are no side mesh pockets for a tube or water bottle - a pity. Instead, there are numerous straps and eyelets for attaching external equipment. However, we felt little need for this in our practical test.

Inside, there is a narrow but thickly padded laptop compartment (up to 13.3 inches). There are also two small mesh pockets and another compartment with a zip for securely stowing valuables. However, that's all there is in terms of storage options.

Wearing comfort & safety: Unspectacular but functional.

The carrying comfort is pleasant, the back system sits well on the back and the foam is firm enough to maintain its profile even with a heavier load. The shoulder straps are comfortably padded. There are no hip fins, instead there are simple straps on the chest and stomach. In short: unspectacular, but functional.

In terms of safety, more reflective elements could be integrated. At the moment, only the small logos are reflective - at least that's a start.

Conclusion

The Vaude Proof 22 multifunctional backpack is waterproof, offers well thought-out features and a comfortable back system. However, the number of pockets is rather small - we would have liked a little more here. Otherwise, the rucksack has a high-quality feel, which is to be expected given the price. Plus point: Made in Germany.

This is how we tested it:

We tested each rucksack for at least 60 kilometres, mostly with a medium load and rather fresh to mild temperatures of 3 to 13 °C. We didn't rely on the manufacturer's volume specifications, but instead filled the backpacks with specially filled bags - there were definitely deviations. In addition, the rucksacks were weighed and tested for their reflective elements; there is still room for improvement in almost all models. Most of the rucksacks are made of waterproof outer material. Some materials only have a water-repellent effect - we tested these under the shower head.

What counts for him is not how fast you get from A to B, but what happens in between. Lehner writes reports, interviews scene celebrities and tests products and bikes - preferably those with a lot of suspension travel.
