While Apidura, Ortlieb and Blackburn have been dividing up the bikepacking market for years, Tatonka is now launching five new bags for gravel bikers and bike adventurers. The Augsburg-based company is focussing on details that the competition lacks: Fidlock magnetic mounts instead of Velcro straps, X-Pac material instead of heavy nylon, reflective surfaces instead of small reflective strips.
The Frame Pouch WP comes in 40 and 50 centimetre lengths. The shorter version holds 4 litres at 150 grams, the longer 6 litres at 175 grams. The 420 den Nylon TPU with sealed seams can withstand 10,000 mm water column. The waterproof zip protects tools and provisions even in constant rain.
It is attached to the top tube with an elasticated cord and hook. A flat pad protects the frame from scratches. Velcro straps secure the bag to the head tube and seat tube. Reflective elements on both sides increase visibility. The PFC/PFAS-free impregnation meets current environmental standards. The Frame Pouch WP 40 costs 70 euros, the WP 50 is 75 euros.
The Bike Saddle Bag S and M rely on magnetic-mechanical Fidlock adapters. While competitor products are often attached to the saddle with Velcro straps and have to be readjusted after every ride, the Tatonka solution simply clicks into place. The holder stays on the saddle and the bag can be removed with one hand.
The Saddle Bag S weighs 135 grams with a volume of 0.5 litres. It holds a multitool, hose and CO2 cartridges. The Saddle Bag M weighs 170 grams, holds 1 litre and can be enlarged using the zip on the underside.
Both bags use X-Pac RX-30 made from recycled polyester. The sides are made of 420 HD Nylon Reflective, a material designed to significantly improve visibility in the dark. A light holder is also integrated. The Fidlock mount fits all standard saddles and is attached to the saddle rails with a screw. The Saddle Bag S costs 50 euros, the M version 55 euros.
The Stem Pouch is secured to the stem with Velcro straps and to the fork with webbing and buckle. The one-handed drawstring allows access to the bar or water bottle without having to stop. The bag holds a 1-litre Nalgene bottle.
Side pockets made of elasticated material offer space for gels or keys. An insert pocket on the back completes the storage compartment concept. The stem pouch weighs 126 grams. X-Pac RX-30 is also used here, combined with robust 210 HD nylon FD. The price: 35 euros.
The Saddle Stuffbag Holder consists of a holster and a waterproof pack sack with a roll-top fastener. The holster is attached to the seat stays and seat post with adjustable straps and hook fasteners and remains on the bike. The pannier can be removed and used separately. With a volume of 13 litres, it can hold a sleeping bag, sleeping mat or a change of clothes.
An elasticated bungee cord spider on the top secures additional equipment such as jackets. The central webbing carries a freely positionable light holder. Reflective material on the sides increases visibility. The weight of 480 grams undercuts many competitor products with comparable volume. The roll closure allows volume adjustment depending on the load. The price is 90 euros.
