Biking should be fun even on cold days. We show you eleven functional items of clothing from head to toe that will keep you warm and make your inner bastard melt away.

The perfect winter outfit? I'd say there's no such thing. Everyone feels the cold differently. While some people are already shivering and pulling their long trousers out of the wardrobe at 15 degrees above zero, others are still tapping their way into the ice water barrel at minus 5 degrees. And while some people only get on their bikes with battery-powered heating soles in their shoes, others only need thick socks and a few warm thoughts.

Nevertheless, there are many items of clothing that we can warmly recommend to every biker who gets on their bike in winter. We have picked out eleven clever items for you here:

Fox Defend Thermal Hoodie

The Thermal hoodie from Fox is perhaps one of the cleverest winter shirts ever. Soft Polartec waffle fleece on the inside keeps you warm, while windproof fabric on the chest protects you from the icy wind. An extended back and close-fitting cuffs keep draughts out. If it's really blowing, simply pull the hood under your helmet and: Hatches sealed. The Fox hoodie works on its own or in combination with a gilet or jacket.

Montura Trace Hybrid Vest

When it comes to winter clothing, bikers are also welcome to take a look at other sports, such as ski touring. Their waistcoats are usually quite cleverly designed. The Trace Hybrid Vest buffers the warmth at the chest and stomach with the help of synthetic down, while the back is made of vapour-permeable material. A double ripstop fabric protects against wear and tear in tough everyday mountain conditions and should therefore be easily equipped for use on the bike.

Scott Trail Insuloft Storm Hybrid trousers

Admittedly: When it comes to winter trousers, bikers are better off poaching in their own territory - a few special details are important here. Because of the bent-over posture, the waistband should be higher at the back, while the legs can be a little shorter and cut closer to avoid chafing on the cranks or chain. And: while the seat area should be waterproof, the thighs should have windstopper and insulating material - as with the winter trousers from Scott.

Endura Baabaa Pro L/S Base Layer

Merino inhibits odours - we all know that by now. But there are even more reasons in favour of this special sheep's wool in winter: The warmth-to-weight ratio is particularly high, and even when damp, merino still keeps you warm - unlike synthetic fibre underwear. The new Baabaa longsleeve is 3D knitted and has few seams for a close-fitting, scratch-free feel.

When the wind blows like ice and sleet hits your face, it's time to unpack your goggles. They will protect your eyes and give you a clear view even in the thickest snow. The best choice is a model with a clear lens, such as the Accuri 2 from 110Percent. They don't cost the earth and fit comfortably over your face thanks to the soft foam padding.

Gobik Superarmour jacket

Hard sub-zero temperatures; heavy rain - sounds like Gobik's new winter jacket could be something of a superhero costume for cyclists. Even at temperatures of minus eight degrees, the Superarmour should still keep you warm. How does it do that? Thanks to a combination of a waterproof and highly breathable eVent DVstorm membrane and Polartec Alpha insulation. Double-layer collar, adjustable sleeves and extended back. The Spaniards also leave nothing to be desired when it comes to the fit. If only winter would finally come!

Mountain Equipment Mugi Headband

Another clever item from mountain sports. Because cycling caps are often windproof and warmly padded all round, heat quickly builds up under the helmet despite the cold. A headband is often the better choice because the body heat can evaporate through the head. Nevertheless, the wind-repellent Mugi headband with soft waffle fleece keeps the ears warm and fits perfectly under the helmet.

GripGrab Ride Windproof Deep Winter Lobster

We humans like to take a leaf out of the book of flora and fauna. This is also the case with the winter gloves from GripGrab: three fingers snuggle together like penguins to keep each other warm, while the thumb and index finger have to hold their position to keep a grip on the gear and brake levers. Pretty clever and really warm. The Lobsters are water-repellent, warmly insulated and equipped with long cuffs and a fat terrycloth thumb for a runny nose.

Fizik Nanuq GTX Flat

For a long time, flat pedal riders either had to put up with frosty toes or resort to alternatives from mountain sports and grandma's thick woollen socks in winter. But with the Nanuq GTX Flat Fizik now offers the fleece-lined cosy version of a flat shoe. The grippy Vibram sole grips the pins just as well as frozen ground, and when meltwater floods the trails, the Gore-Tex membrane and neoprene shaft keep your feet dry. Top features: all-round edge protection and finely adjustable Boa dial.

Löffler M Hoody Tech Merino

Hard shell, soft centre. What works with Oreo biscuits also works with the onion principle. Under the protective layer of a rain or insulating jacket, the Löffler merino hoody provides cosy warmth while still allowing sufficient air to circulate thanks to the grid structure on the inside. The attached hood keeps your head and ears at operating temperature. Cold hands? Put them in the cosy kangaroo pocket.

Vaude Minaki III STX Winter

Vaude has understood what makes a good winter shoe: a grippy tread on the outside and warming fleece on the inside - the cold-sensitive toes even get a double layer. The environmentally friendly Sympatex membrane also seals the shoe around the cleat area so that neither cold nor moisture can penetrate. In the latest evolutionary stage, the Velcro strap leaves the Boa fastener free so that the Minaki III can be easily adjusted on the go.
