Safety on the trail is not a trend, it's life insurance. With the new Rockrider Defence Bag protector backpack, Decathlon is launching a real all-rounder on the market, which should cut a fine figure not only in rough terrain but also in powder - and at the usual aggressive price point. The protector backpack combines 21 litres of storage space with an integrated D3O back protector and is aimed at mountain bikers and winter sports enthusiasts at a price of 99.99 euros.

We've all been there: the flow is tempting, the speed increases and suddenly the trail becomes treacherous. In moments like these, equipment often separates the wheat from the chaff. A good back protector is now part of the standard repertoire for many mountain bikers, whether in the bike park or on an after-work ride. Decathlon is now launching a new candidate under its Rockrider performance brand that can do far more than just act as a backpack.

D3O: The invisible bodyguard

The centrepiece of the new Rockrider backpack is the integrated D3O protector. For all those who like it technical: the material is soft and flexible in its normal state, but hardens in a flash on impact to absorb the energy. The highlight: the protector element can be removed. So if you want to travel "light" or use the rucksack in everyday life, you can simply leave the protection in the locker.

From the E-MTB tour to the ski slope

With a volume of 21 litres, the rucksack is aimed at the "golden mean". It is large enough for a day tour including a change of clothes and a snack, but compact enough not to swing back and forth on technical descents. An ergonomic carrying system with a neoprene-reinforced hip belt is designed to ensure that the pack sits firmly on the body even when things get really bumpy on the roots.

Particularly smart: Decathlon has designed the backpack as a Year-round tool designed.

  • For bikers: There is a special compartment for e-bike range extenders and a soft pocket for goggles.
  • For winter sports enthusiasts: Ski and snowboard holders are also on board, as is space for an avalanche shovel and probe.
  • For safety: Depending on the model, there is even an integrated Recco reflector, which makes it easier for rescue services to search for you.

Compartment layout and storage space

The Defence Bag offers 21 litres of volume, divided into four separate compartments. A soft fabric glasses pocket protects sensitive glasses from scratches. A special compartment accommodates range extenders for e-mountain bikes. In winter, an avalanche shovel or probe can be stowed there as an alternative. Side attachment options allow skis to be transported, while another option allows snowboards to be carried. Depending on the model configuration, it is compatible with RECCO reflectors, which are designed to facilitate localisation in the event of avalanche accidents.

The organisation allows you to carry tools, spare parts, snacks and a change of clothes. According to the manufacturer, the pockets are arranged in such a way that frequently used items can be reached quickly.

Price-performance announcement from Lille

It's no secret that Decathlon comes in at a premium. But with the materials used (100% coated polyester for maximum abrasion resistance) and the well thought-out layout, the Rockrider protector backpack is aimed directly at the established competition. With 99,99 Euro the hurdle for more safety on the mountain is now significantly lower for many riders.

Alternative protector backpacks: what does the market offer?

If you are looking for the right "backbone", you should take a look at these classics as well as the Rockrider model:

  1. EVOC FR Enduro / Trail Series: The undisputed top dog. The Munich-based company offers a huge selection of sizes and colours. The Liteshield protector is top-notch, but the rucksacks are usually priced between 160 and 220 euros.
  2. Ortovox Free Rider: Originally from the winter sports sector, this rucksack offers an extremely close fit and a very flexible protector. Ideal for anyone looking for a very clean design (approx. 180 euros).
  3. Deuter Attack: A veteran of protector backpacks. Since this season, it has scored highly with the recyclable Re Zro protector and the typical Deuter carrying comfort. It is extremely robust, but is often somewhat heavier than the competition (from 220 euros).
  4. CamelBak K.U.D.U. / M.U.L.E. Pro: These models combine hydration system expertise with impact protection. The protector is often cut a little narrower here, which ensures plenty of ventilation (approx. 150 - 190 euros).

What the editorial team says

Safety should never be a question of budget. With the new Rockrider rucksack, Decathlon provides a strong argument for anyone looking for a robust all-in-one solution for summer and winter without breaking the bank.
