With better chassis, more grip and stronger protection, the limits of what can be ridden are constantly shifting. Exciting prototypes show where the journey is heading - namely downhill. These are the highlights of Eurobike 2023 in Frankfurt from the enduro and downhill sectors.

The personal test bike of the Daniel Gyro Gearloose of the bike industry is of course anything but ordinary. Intend boss Cornelius Kapfinger tries out his own products on this single-link enduro bike. Thanks to "Integrated Loop Technology", the tubes and connecting clamps are made from a single piece of carbon fibre. In the automated production process in the Czech Republic, robots assist in laying the fibres.

Kapfinger himself is experimenting with the carbon tubes from CompoTech. His prototype of the Intend Edge upside-down fork with a carbon chassis should save a few more grams. However, it will still take some time before it is ready for the market. Of course, the CDuro is also available with the new Intend Trinity brakes and the Intend Hover Gamechanger damper including cooling fins.

With Pinion gearing, CNC-machined parts and a high-pivot rear triangle, the Gamux Sego is currently the shooting star of the Downhill World Cup. The latest version of the prototype bike with Manitou suspension was presented at the Gates stand in Frankfurt. Instead of a chain, the Gamux Factory Racing Team now relies on a belt drive. This has only been permitted by UCI regulations since January 2023.

The belt on the Gamux Sego is deflected by large cogwheels and additionally secured by a drop guard underneath the rear wheel hub. Gamux is currently experimenting with the optimum position of the deflection point. The frame should weigh around four kilos without the gearbox. Production for end customers is planned for the end of the year.

After extensive testing in the Enduro World Cup, the British company Orange is launching a revised Switch 6 with 160 millimetres of travel at the front and rear. New features include a large storage compartment in the down tube and optimised kinematics for less drivetrain influence. At 64 degrees, the steering angle is particularly slack. A frameset is available for 3200 euros and the complete bike for 6500 euros.

For the first time, DVO is launching a fork with thick 38-millimetre stanchions. The increased stiffness of the DVO Onyx D1 38 should benefit enduro racers and heavy bikers in particular. Thanks to 160 to 180 millimetres of suspension travel, an optimised Boost axle and a post mount for 203 millimetre discs, the new Onyx is ready for the most demanding descents. The lower valves in the stanchions automatically equalise the pressure during compression. The top American model D1 with adjustable high and low-speed compression damping costs 1149 euros. Available from autumn, exclusively with 44 millimetres of travel and for 29-inch front wheels.

The Taiwanese suspension specialists RTS also want to better serve bikers with an aggressive riding style and have given the Stitch enduro fork thick 38-millimetre stanchions. These not only promise increased stiffness, but the material thickness has also been reduced thanks to the larger diameter. Compared to its predecessor, the RST Stitch 29 V2 saves a whopping 500 grams in weight. On the fork with 160 to 180 millimetres of travel, both the low-speed compression and rebound can be adjusted via adjusters. Meanwhile, the high-speed compression stage is set internally via shims. The price of the new RST Stitch is expected to be around 1100 euros.

Goodyear Newton tyres

Goodyear - the American big player in the automotive sector - also wants to step on the gas on bikes. As MTF for the front and MTR for the rear, the Goodyear Newton comes in three rubber compounds and carcass variants. This means it covers everything from trail to downhill. Only in 2.5 inch width, prices from 60 euros.

Hubert Ruff's ambitious claim for his flat pedalsnot a single complaint! This is made possible by a CNC-milled platform, double needle bearings and ten sealing levels on a steel axle hardened with plasma nitration. All work steps are carried out within a radius of ten kilometres in Baden-Württemberg. The pair weighs 378 grams and costs 296 euros. For this price, HaigRip can realise the wildest custom designs.
