The MASH action sports festival rolls back into Munich's Olympic Park - and brings plenty of airtime with it. International professionals compete in five disciplines, while the audience marvels, cheers and occasionally can't keep their mouths shut. The event has been growing steadily since 2014 - bigger, more colourful, more spectacular. Olympic Park boss Marion Schöne celebrates the diversity, and the tens of thousands of visitors in recent years speak for themselves: action sports nerds alongside families in picnic mode.
The city of Munich is also behind the spectacle. Sports Mayor Verena Dietl sees it as the perfect stage to get young people excited about exercise. The new Munich Action Park in the Olympic Action Sports Centre adds the perfect ramp on top. The aim is to celebrate athletes, create sparks - and get as many people as possible on boards, bikes or in the halfpipe.
The skateboarders ride on a vert halfpipe, which was already used at the X Games 2013. The ramp measures four metres in height and 19 metres in width. It stands on a platform in front of the grass steps in the Olympic lake. This discipline is thus returning to the place where it was last seen 13 years ago.
BMX riders get an 80 metre long jump line. The track runs through the centre of Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz. Mountain bikers will hold their competition on the same course. For the MTB scene, this means a comeback after 2016. The combination of both disciplines on one set-up is new for the festival.
Wakeboarders show off their tricks on the water. The exact location in the Olympic Park is yet to be announced. Street dancers will also be competing. The street dance contest is taking place again after a break. All competitions will feature top international athletes.
The MASH Festival forms the framework for the sports competitions. Sport, art, culture and creativity run in parallel. A mini ramp is available at MASH Square. Chill-out areas and open spaces invite you to linger. The festival is designed to appeal to all age groups and motivate people to join in. The backdrop of the Olympic Park serves as the venue.
