The flipside of Germany's highest peak has always been favourable to mountain bikers. Almost every season starts there with a new trail highlight. And this year? There's even a completely new bike park to celebrate on the Tyrolean side in May!

Garmisch-Partenkirchen opens the first official trail for mountain bikers! A little joke. Sorry, but it had to be. No, of course there is still no official trail network in Garmisch. But just behind Garmisch, on the other side of the Tyrolean border, on the south side of the Zugspitze, bikers have picked up their shovels again. The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is opening the "Bikepark Zugspitze" at the Ehrwalder Wettersteinbahn cable car on Sunday 17 May!

Three freshly shaped and very entertaining lines will then be released:

Blue Bird

  • Length: 4.1 kilometres
  • Downhill: 420 metres in depth
  • Difficulty: easy

Character: From the mountain station all the way down to the valley station - easy, but long and very playful: The blue descent has fast sections with small jumps, but also fun curve combinations and sidehits. Centrepiece: a jibline where even advanced riders can get creative.

  • Length: 1.2 kilometres
  • Downhill: 160 metres in depth
  • Difficulty: medium

Special feature: Half-built, half-natural - and always with challenging changes. The trail has stepped and sometimes rocky sections, some of which appear quite unexpectedly in front of the handlebars after a flow bend. In the middle of it all, you'll find yourself in rocking mode over a curved wooden bridge.

Bare Knuckle

Quick reactions are an advantage on the black line if you want to box your way through completely.Photo: Tiroler Zugspitz Arena/Nikola RadovicQuick reactions are an advantage on the black line if you want to box your way through completely.
  • Length: 0.7 kilometres
  • Downhill: 130 metres in depth
  • Difficulty: difficult

Special features: A wooden bridge at the start, a wooden bend in the middle and the "banana jump" at the end from a large wooden bridge. In between, the trail is not too steep and not too technical, but you get a good pace and then have to keep going. There is no chicken line!

With this new bike park, the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is expanding its offering for all those who have struggled with the rather gnarly trails on the Lermooser Grubigstein or the famous Blindsee Trail.

Opening hours of the Ehrwalder Wettersteinbahn in summer 2026

The Ehrwalder Wettersteinbahn 4-seater chairlift is open from 14 May to 8 November (depending on weather and snow conditions), daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, in July, August and September from 8 am to 5:30 pm.

In addition to these three new trails, six more trails will be opened in Berwang and Bichlbach during the summer season. The exact dates will be announced in good time: zugspitzarena.com/bike

Big party to mark the opening of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena season

Test bikes, trial shows, guided tours, workshops and food trucks until 10 pm: from 14 to 16 May (Ascension weekend), the new season will be opened and celebrated in style in Lermoos at the Grubigsteinbahn. This is a good opportunity to add the opening of the Zugspitze Bike Park on 17 May to the celebrations!
