The Pinion motor-gearbox unit is making further inroads into the trekking sector. Pegasus equips the new Estremo Evo Lite with the innovative MGU technology, which combines electronic shifting with a powerful drive. Our in-house visit to Pinion shows exactly what is behind the MGU. The trekking e-bike is aimed at demanding riders who are looking for low-maintenance technology with a high level of riding comfort. The combination of toothed belt drive and integrated gearbox promises minimum maintenance and maximum reliability.
The development of Pinion technology began in the late 2000s for mountain bikes and was presented at Eurobike in 2010. The system initially established itself in heavy-duty touring and everyday bikes before the MGU development reached the e-bike sector.
Pegasus was one of the first manufacturers to use the Pinion MGU in series models in 2024. The company offers the technology at an attractive price-performance ratio. The combination of modern drive technology and high suitability for everyday use should appeal to discerning e-bike riders.
At Pegasus, we recognised the potential of the Pinion MGU right from the start. We are proud to be able to offer e-bikes with the motor-gearbox unit at particularly attractive prices. - Giovanni Minacapelli, PEGASUS Product Manager
The motor-gearbox unit combines an electronically controlled twelve-speed manual gearbox with an 85 Nm motor. Peak power reaches 600 watts with close coordination between the engine and transmission. Gear changes should be smooth, fast and precise, while the optional automatic transmission increases comfort.
The 800 Wh battery can be removed quickly and supports FIT technology for long ranges. A clear display and ergonomic controls round off the system. A USB-C charging port enables smartphones to be charged while driving. The MGU only requires an oil change every 10,000 kilometres and is particularly suitable for frequent drivers and commuters.
The braking system comes from Shimano XT and is designed to provide reliable deceleration. A 100 mm air suspension fork absorbs bumps, while the parallelogram suspension support promises additional comfort. Ergonomic grips round off the comfort package.
The belt drive is virtually maintenance-free and transmits power cleanly to the rear wheel. The combination with the Pinion MGU eliminates classic wear parts such as derailleur gears or hub gears. Puncture-proof Schwalbe tyres and a robust pannier rack underline the trekking e-bike's suitability for everyday use.
A 100 lux Supernova headlight provides bright illumination in the dark. An integrated brake light increases safety in road traffic. The lighting system complies with StVZO requirements and is suitable for everyday use.
The Pegasus Estremo Evo 12 Lite will be available from ZEG dealers from mid-December for 5499 euros. There is a choice of three frame shapes: Diamond, trapeze and step-through. Each shape is available in three sizes. The colour options include Dark Metallic Black Matt and Pebble Grey.
As a cheaper alternative, Pegasus offers the Estremo Evo 9 Lite for 4999 euros. It uses the nine-speed version of the Pinion MGU and is also available in all three frame shapes. The colour selection includes Dark Metallic Black Matt and Provence Matt. Both models will be available from mid-December.
The Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft was founded in 1966 as a co-operation between eight two-wheeler dealers. One year later, the ZEG already had over 100 members. Today, around 1000 dealers belong to the association, almost half of them in other European countries.
ZEG has been developing its own bicycle and accessory brands since the early 1980s. In 2026, the dealer network celebrates its 60th birthday with anniversary and highlight models. The range extends from e-bikes such as the Pegasus Solero series about sporty mountain bikes and e-MTBs from Bulls to non-motorised bicycles of all categories.
