The small country in the west of the UK boasts some of the best mountain bike trails in the world, and not without good reason. Among the many trail centres spread across hilly Wales, Coed-y-Brenin is the first of its kind in the UK. The well-designed and well-drained trails offer riding fun in all weathers and for a wide range of ability levels. To ensure that the moody weather doesn't throw a spanner in the works too quickly, you should have the right equipment at the start of your visit. These accessories should not be missing during a stop at the trail centre.
Ok, of course that was to be expected. A rain jacket is probably the first thing you pack when travelling to the UK. Nevertheless, the Leatt is worth a mention, because with an RRP of 179 euros, it doesn't tear too big a hole in the travel budget and still comes up with many useful features. The HydraDri 3.0 has a comfortable cut and extended cuffs that reach over the gloves. The hood can be attached magnetically to either the helmet or the back. A 20,000 water column also provides lasting resistance to British rain. The Leatt also has several ventilation options that prevent you from stewing in your own juices on the climbs - after all, you're still pedalling up the flowing climbs in the trail centres of Wales. Incidentally, the Leatt is also available in a version for female bikers! Price: 179 Euro >> available here at a reduced price.
>> Scotland's trail centre: Tweed Time in the Lowlands
Who knows more about rain gear than the Scots? Of course, Endura also knows that rain trousers hardly last longer on a bike than a set of tyres on a drift car - the combination of water and mud acts like sandpaper on the saddle. The Scots therefore keep the price pleasantly low and try to improve durability with robust inserts in the seat area. Thanks to its elasticated waistband, the Hummvee can be easily pulled over trousers or combined with padded trousers using the Clickfast system. A lightweight, breathable 2.5-layer fabric provides durable rain protection. Price: 89,99 Euro >> available here at a reduced price.
Knee pads are a must - even on flow trails - and the lightweight version with level 1 protection is a good choice. Models such as the Speed Pro from Troy Lee Designs with flexible D3O foam are still easy to pedal and are better ventilated than their heavy-duty siblings for downhill riding. Easy to put on thanks to the slip-on design and not too heavy at 274 grams (size M/L). Clever: the packaging turns out to be a mudguard - which you can use on up to 15 rainy days a month. Price 71 Euro
The shaped slopes of the trail parks tempt you to step on the gas - a lightweight full face is a sensible option as long as it is well ventilated on the climbs. The 770 gram Vanguard is such a candidate. It can be optimally adjusted using different cheek pads, is easy to close with a magnetic clip and sits surprisingly airily. New: available as a limited edition in a chic camo look. Price 330 Euro >> at Alltricks or Bike24 available*.
The perfect tyre for the trail centre rolls effortlessly up the gentle climbs and offers a high level of grip on the loose gravel downhill, which lies on the paved surface like cake crumbs - loose over hardpack, as the jargon goes. The Peacekeeper with triple compound, harder centre lugs and large, soft outer tread seems to be made for this and reliably maintains contact with the trail centre ground. The SG2 carcass protects against punctures but reduces the weight to around 1000 grams. Price 69,95 Euro >> available here.
In many trail centres, the next pit stop is not just around the next bend. A rucksack with the most important tools and supplies for the ravenous appetite should therefore always be with you. All the better if - like the Scott - it is equipped with a D3O back protector and provides the wearer with support in the event of a fall. A rain cover and tool compartment are also on board, and a hydration bladder is a useful addition. Price 199,95 Euro >> available here.
How did we mountain bikers manage without those little plastic mudguards back then? In any case, we looked like we had the measles on our faces after every ride in the rain. The new Evo fenders are designed in such a way that they don't hit the fork crown even when fully compressed. Apart from that, the Shorty is one of the best mini mudguards we have ever tested and provides excellent protection from mud splashes. It fits almost every fork and is optionally available in a long version and as a bolt-on model for various suspension forks. Price 29,99 Euro >> available here at a reduced price*.
No one is left behind - whether it's a bike buddy or your own offspring. With a pull system, the stronger rider helps the weaker rider to get onto the trail, as not every trail centre offers a shuttle to take you up the short climbs. The Mountain Explorer can be mounted under the saddle using Velcro and works like the old ski zippers: detach the loop from the stem and the 2-metre pull cable rolls back into the housing as if by magic. Price 29,95 Euro >> available here at a reduced price.
The Airflex is worth recommending for several reasons: with a manageable weight and compact shape, it creates a decent volume per stroke. In addition, the extendable hose protects the valve and makes pumping easier. Its rubberised handle sits comfortably in the hand. The version with Clik-Tec valve head for Schwalbe's new super valve is new. The Airflex is also optionally available with a screw head for Presta and Schrader valves. Price 39,99 Euro >> available here.
If you find the WTB too weak on the downhill section, you should take a look at the new Dissector. Its redesigned sides and transition lugs are now supposed to grip earlier and cut across the trail like a scalpel, especially when leaning and on hard surfaces. Even if you have to accept slight compromises in rolling behaviour, the Maxxis is a great alternative for trail parks - with many options for rubber compound and puncture protection. Price from 59,90 Euro >> available here.
No rucksack and still have the most important equipment with you? It's possible - with the BC18 from Crankbrothers. The Americans have equipped a sideloader bottle cage, which can be mounted for right or left-handed riders, with a mini-tool, tyre lever, tubeless tool and an additional holder for a mini-pump or CO2 cartridge. You only have to return to the trailhead for a quick snack in between. Price 99,99 Euro >> available here available here.
Not every flow trail offers a bike wash, but with the OC 4 from Kärcher, you always have your mobile washing system with you. Thanks to the integrated rechargeable battery and eight-litre tank, you can even clean your bike in the middle of nowhere - although you should of course always make sure to use environmentally friendly lubricants. The entire system, including the 2.8 metre spiral hose, can be stowed away in the water tank to save space. The bike kit includes a foam nozzle, cleaner and microfibre cloth. Price 199,99 Euro >> available here.
Getting into the car with your bike clothes on? Not an option. Changing in the muddy car park? Also daft. The Dirt Bag from Endura serves as a waterproof base for changing clothes and, thanks to the drawstring, can be tied together to form a practical laundry bag - keeping the car clean and your feet dry. Price 46 Euro >> available here.
The best trail centres are located in tranquil Wales and are therefore best reached by plane. In the new Evoc Mountain Bike Bag Pro, your bike travels first class and is optimally protected from all turbulence. Clever: The new geometry of the bag makes it easier to transport bikes with an integrated cockpit or internally routed cables - these can now remain on the bike and do not have to be unscrewed. A bike stand is integrated into the sturdy polycarbonate base and a clip-on roller for the front handle helps when pulling the bag to the luggage drop-off point. Price 795 Euro >> available here at a reduced price.
