Once a royal retreat on the lakeshore: Montfort Castle in Langenargen.
The Lake Constance cycle path is one of the most beautiful and popular cycle routes in Europe. But a detour into the hinterland also has its charm - to baroque castles, through vineyards and orchards or through idyllic river valleys and Allgäu villages. Seven charming cycle tours to get away from Lake Constance.

1st Three-Country Tour: By boat and bike to Switzerland and Austria

Midsummer tip: Basically, this cycle tour on Lake Constance could also be described as a three-country bathing tour. At least there are many lidos and natural beaches for swimming fans along the route, including gems such as the Badhütte in Rorschach and the Rohrspitz natural bathing beach. Instead of getting on our bikes at the landing stage in Wasserburg, we first hop on a boat to Rorschach in Switzerland. After a look at the Badhütte and the historic Kornhaus, we turn onto the Lake Constance cycle path heading east to Gaißau.

2. the Hopfenschlaufe: charming one-day cycle tour from Swabian Lake Constance to Tettnang

We can start the cycle tour on the shores of Lake Constance or on the hop trail in the Siggenweiler district of Tettnang. In the museum at Hopfengut No.20, visitors can learn many interesting facts about the cultivated plant that gives our beer its tangy flavour and aroma. You can also sample some in the adjoining inn. But perhaps we'd better wait until the end of the tour! We continue from Siggenweiler to Brünnensweiler. On a clear day, it's worth taking a detour on foot to the Brünnensweiler Höhe to enjoy the full panorama of the Alps.

3rd two-country cycle tour: cycle tour across Lake Constance to Switzerland

A breath of sea air is the order of the day! Don't forget your windbreaker! Our 65-kilometre cycle tour begins with a refreshing boat trip from Friedrichshafen across Lake Constance to Romanshorn in Switzerland, including a beautiful view of the Alps. The most striking building in the town is the neo-Romanesque church of St. John, built in 1913. After passing the old office buildings at the harbour, we head west along the Lake Constance cycle path. It is often much less busy here than on the German side. Uttwil, Kesswil and Güttingen are charming Thurgau farming villages characterised by the apple orchards and meadow orchards that are so typical of the region.

4. cycling around the Montfort axis

We get on our bikes right by the lake, against the illustrious backdrop of Langenargen Castle. For the first few kilometres, the Lake Constance cycle path leads us through the Argen nature reserve, then over the old cable suspension bridge to Kressbronn. In the easternmost town on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg, we turn away from the lake into the hilly hinterland on our cycle tour. Small villages and small lakes are on the following programme: they are called Nitzenweiler, Wielandsweiler, Oberwolferstweiler, Echetweiler and Siebratsweiler or Schleinsee and Muttelsee. In Achberg, the castle with its masterpieces of baroque stucco work is well worth a visit.

5. the Leiblachtal circuit: cycle tour from Lindau to Hergensweiler

The Leiblachtal loop starts at the dam to the island town of Lindau. If you are not familiar with the town, you should definitely plan a detour to the harbour and the historic alleyways. In terms of time, this could easily be incorporated into this Lake Constance cycle tour, as the route is not too long at 25 kilometres. Otherwise, we turn onto the Lake Constance-Königssee cycle path and head towards the Allgäu. The Leiblach is the border river between the Austrian Vorarlberg and Bavaria. Where there were passport and customs controls until 2004, you can now easily cross the bridges between Germany and Austria. The natural jewel Leiblach is the habitat of several endangered species of fish, animals and plants. At Bad Diezlings, it is worth taking a short trip to Vorarlberg.

6. birds, apples and old tractors: cycle tour through the hinterland of Meersburg and Uhldingen

The cycle tour starts at Lake Constance in Meersburg or Stetten. The lake is soon out of sight and we cycle through fields and apple orchards to Ahausen. In nearby Bermatingen, the many well-preserved half-timbered houses catch the eye. We continue on to Salem. The town is not only known for its celebrity boarding school, but also for its monastery. Salem Monastery is one of the most impressive cultural monuments on Lake Constance. We now follow the Swabian Spa Road past the monastery pond. We cycle through the Lake Constance hinterland bird sanctuary towards Mülhofen to the unusual tractor museum.

7. from the shores of Lake Constance to the Allgäu: the hilly hinterland of Lindau and Langenargen

A tip before the start: because of the hills and the length of the route, an e-bike is more comfortable for the less sporty. We start our cycle tour at Kressbronn railway station and cycle towards Lake Constance and further west. At the historic cable suspension bridge over the Argen, the route follows the course of the river into the hinterland. Passing the medieval moated castle of Giessen - which unfortunately can only be visited by prior arrangement - we cycle through the fertile Argen valley via Unterlangnau, Steinenbach and Primisweiler to Wangen in the Württemberg Allgäu.
