The combination of an air mattress with a sleeping bag open to the ceiling offers more freedom of movement and therefore even more comfort. The so-called quilt system offers lightweight three-season sleeping systems with a small pack size - ideal for bikepacking adventures.

This article was first published in December 2019. The Altmann 300 Syn multifunctional sleeping bag shown below is no longer available from Vaude, but there are other sleeping bags that can be used as a blanket. The Performance air mattress from Vaude is still available - even in new versions.

Multifunctional sleeping bag Vaude Altmann 300 Syn

The Vaude Altmann 300 Syn multifunctional sleeping bag with 300 gram synthetic filling is light and compact, keeps you warm even in single-digit temperatures and is even water-repellent. But the best thing about it is that it can also be used as an outdoor blanket or an extra-warm poncho.

In addition, Vaude includes special plastic clips with the Altmann 300 Syn, with which campers can attach the sleeping bag as a blanket to insulating mats with welded edges (see below). The so-called quilt system offers more freedom of movement and therefore even more comfort while remaining very lightweight.

We tested the sleeping bag in the hammock. Wrapped in the Altmann 300 Syn, whose "Comfort" temperature is 9 °C according to the manufacturer ("Limit" 5 °C, "Extreme" -9 °C), our near-standard man, who is just over 1.80 metres tall and weighs around 75 kilos, did not freeze on nights with low temperatures between eight and 17 degrees.

However, a truly comfortable climate for restful nights at ambient temperatures below 15 °C can only be achieved with an additional Hammock underquilt (Link) or an inserted insulating mat (underneath). Otherwise you will cool down too much from below.

Airbed: Vaude Performance 7 M sleeping pad

Because the ground is hard and the air is usually quite fresh at night: the insulating mat belongs in every bikepacking pack. This high-performance mat from Vaude with Primaloft filling on the inside of the lying surface is lightweight, can be rolled up small and can be inflated by mouth in no time at all. A non-return valve prevents uncontrolled air loss.

Although the Vaude valve is not suitable for bike pumps, it allows so much air through that the Performance 7 M is filled to the brim with around 15 lungfuls. The non-return valve conveniently prevents air from flowing back.Photo: Max FuchsAlthough the Vaude valve is not suitable for bike pumps, it allows so much air through that the Performance 7 M is filled to the brim with around 15 lungfuls. Measuring 183 x 53 x 7 centimetres, the insulating mat offers sufficient comfort and also buffers out uneven ground. In the Hammock the volume is particularly advantageous because the insulating mat does not need to be inflated so tightly and then adapts more flexibly to the shape of the body. The R-value of 2.7 (now 2.5) is theoretically also sufficient for cooler nights around freezing point. Five-year guarantee.

The material of the Vaude Performance 7 M high-performance air mattress is not smooth, but also not as velvety as other insulating mats. Hard to describe, but it feels good. Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
