Komoot wants to offer its users a realistic depiction of planned routes with 3D maps. The new feature is available to anyone with a Komoot Premium subscription.

According to Strava (our sister magazine TOUR reported) is now also introducing Komoot 3D maps for premium users. Komoot promises "adventure tingling just by looking at the map". The 3D maps are intended to help users plan routes more precisely and assess them better, while at the same time whetting their appetite for adventure in the mountains and providing inspiration.

How it works: Activate the 3D view in the Komoot route planner

In the route planner, clicking on the 3D icon changes the view from 2D to 3D. Conversely, when the 3D view is activated, a 2D icon is displayed in the same place. You can return to the 2D view by clicking on it.

The 3D maps are reserved for Komoot Premium users and are included in the web version; the 3D view is not available in the smartphone app. To activate the new Komoot feature, simply click on the 3D icon on the right-hand side of the browser window. The position of the icon is marked with an arrow in the image gallery above. After clicking on it, the view changes from 2D to 3D and a brief display at the top shows how the map can be rotated and tilted.

Trail View in the 3D view

Trail View is also available in the 3D view. Thanks to photos of trails, paths and roads, this provides a realistic picture of the road conditions. Trail View, which was introduced in August of this year, is also available in the 3D view. The feature helps users to better assess the condition of the trail. For this purpose, user photos are analysed and the photos that show trails are displayed. Such images can be found wherever small green dots are displayed on the map. Clicking on such a point opens a photo of the route. This makes it easier to adapt the route to your own ability when planning. Our sister magazine BIKE reported in this article in detail about the Trail View feature.
