Outdoor outfitter Big Agnes has updated its Copper Spur and Tiger Wall ultralight tents. What's new? Both models use HyperBead fabric, which the manufacturer claims is 50 per cent stronger and 25 per cent more waterproof than previous materials. The 30 centimetre short ShortStik poles enable a compact pack size for mounting on the handlebars or in panniers. The Copper Spur is available in three sizes from 600 euros, the Tiger Wall in two variants from 550 euros.
According to the manufacturer, the HyperBead fabric is not only more stable and waterproof, but also weighs six per cent less than conventional tent fabrics. The water column is now 1500 millimetres, so the fabric is considered waterproof. However, such lightweight tents cannot withstand constant rain.
All materials are PFAS-free and the seams are PVC and VOC-free. The new waterproof pannier has Big Hitch straps for attaching it to the bike. The ShortStik frame measures just 30 centimetres and therefore fits into frame bags or across the handlebars.
The two tent models from Big Agnes are aimed at bikepackers and bike travellers who prefer freestanding constructions. The single-person version of the Copper Spur UL Bikepack weighs 1040 grams in trail weight, while the Tiger Wall UL Bikepack weighs 896 grams - which, as the name UL suggests, is ultralight. According to the manufacturer, both tents can be pitched without pegs and offer two entrances with two vestibules each.
The Copper Spur UL Bikepack is available in three sizes. The UL1 version offers 1.9 square metres of interior space with an interior height of 97 centimetres. The total weight is 1350 grams. The UL2 version weighs 1670 grams and offers 2.7 square metres of interior space at a height of 102 centimetres. The largest version, UL3, weighs 1970 grams, offers 3.8 square metres of interior space and an interior height of 109 centimetres.
Each version has two vestibules, each with an area of 0.8 square metres. The interior features 3D foot pockets, a helmet compartment, daisy chains and other inner compartments. The so-called shelter mode without inner tent reduces the weight to 872 grams for the UL1, 1140 grams for the UL2 and 1430 grams for the UL3. Optional footprints are available weighing 142, 227 or 312 grams.
The Tiger Wall UL Bikepack uses a single-bar construction with colour-coded buckles for quick set-up. The UL1 version weighs 1180 grams complete and offers 1.8 square metres of internal space with an internal height of 99 centimetres. The pack size is 38 x 13 centimetres. The UL2 version weighs 1370 grams and offers 2.6 square metres of interior space with the same interior height and identical pack size.
Both Tiger Wall versions have two vestibules, each measuring 0.7 square metres. The Wheelie Stake Out Loops allow the tent to be tied to the bike, which should make it easier to pitch on rocky ground. In shelter mode, the UL1 weighs 727 grams, the UL2 920 grams. Footprints weighing 142 or 227 grams are optionally available.
The Copper Spur UL Bikepack costs 600 euros in the UL1 version, the UL2 700 Euro and the UL3 780 Euro. The Tiger Wall UL Bikepack is designed for 550 Euro in the UL1 version and 600 Euro in the UL2 version is available. Both models share features such as the 3D foot pocket, the helmet compartment and the drybag pannier. The Copper Spur offers more interior space and interior height, while the Tiger Wall scores with even less weight.
