The bad news for road cyclists first: All light sets are optimised for round handlebars and seat posts. They still work on moderately aerodynamic cockpits, but do not fit extreme aero shapes. Everyone else can be happy, because the inexpensive sets are quick to fit, easy to operate and provide enough light for moderate speeds in the dark. The battery status indicators work reliably and the rear lights from Aldi and Lidl even offer a brake light - a real surprise in this price range. The only downer: the Aldi set for less than ten euros is only available during the promotion week and will therefore probably not be available again until the autumn.
The premium LED light set consists of a front light with an integrated display that shows the battery status and light level, as well as a rear light with an intelligent brake light function. The headlight offers four switchable light levels up to 100 lux and automatically adapts to the surroundings thanks to the light sensor. An 1800 mAh battery ensures long runtimes and is charged via USB-C. The rear light uses bright OSRAM LEDs, is protected to IP55 and can be mounted without tools. Both bike lights have quick-release mounts and offer lateral visibility for greater safety.
The Crivit LED bike light set with emergency brake function offers an amazing amount of technology for just €24.99: A front light with Osram LED, coloured battery indicator and a rear light with intelligent brake light function ensure greater safety in road traffic. Both lights are splash-proof, easy to install and rechargeable via USB-C. With a total weight of just 145 grams, the set is very light, yet robust and suitable for everyday use. A three-year guarantee rounds off the strong price-performance package >> available here.
The LED lighting set from Tchibo consists of a rechargeable front light with three light levels and a long-lasting rear light. Both lights are splash-proof, rechargeable via USB and equipped with holders. The front light offers up to 60 lux, a coloured battery control system and long runtimes - ideal for everyday use and commuting >> available here.
Technical data
The light set from Tchibo impresses with its good workmanship, simple operation and splash-proof housing. The rear light is particularly powerful, lasting over twelve hours. The front light offers two and a half hours of illumination plus reserve at the highest level, and up to nine hours at the lowest level - but too weak for real night rides. The battery indicators are clearly visible, the holders are stable and easy to mount, and the front light can even be swivelled sideways. A reliable set for commuting and everyday rides, but only suitable to a limited extent for sporty night rides.
The Lidl set leaves the most rounded overall impression in the test. Depending on the offer phase, it costs €14.99 or €24.99 and offers functions that are usually found in higher price ranges. At around two and a half hours, the burn time of the front light is at a solid level, and a flashing LED warns of the last half hour remaining. The holders work reliably on round handlebars and bars, but only to a limited extent on aero shapes. The highlight is the rear light with reliable brake light function - a real safety advantage in city traffic and on winding roads.
At around ten euros, the Aldi set is the price breaker in the test and technically almost on a par with Lidl. The lighting power, ease of use and brake light function are impressive, but the brackets are also designed for round cross-sections. The only disadvantage: the set is only available during the special offer weeks and is therefore difficult to plan.
Our favourite therefore remains the Lidl set: technically strong, permanently available and overall the most balanced choice.
