With the Neuron:On AL 9, Canyon has an E-Fully in its range that is comparatively light-footed despite its aluminium frame and tame touring design. It weighs around 25 kilograms - a good weight for a bike with a large 800 Wh battery and Bosch Performance CX motor. Especially as the most expensive aluminium Neuron remains completely within the price range at 5499 euros. We tested whether the all-rounder from Koblenz is worth its price.
This test was conducted as part of a duel with the Cannondale Moterra 3. Two new e-mountainbikes under 6000 euros put to the test. The other articles in this series can be found directly here in the links:
The Canyon Neuron:On AL 9 combines a modern aluminium frame with a balanced trail layout and 145 mm rear and 150 mm front suspension travel. A Bosch PowerTube 800 Wh battery is located in the down tube and can be removed quickly and easily. The tried-and-tested Bosch Performance Line CX motor, which delivers up to 100 Nm of torque following the latest software update, provides the power.
As a direct mail order company, Canyon plays to its price advantage. When it comes to the suspension, wheels and brakes, the Koblenz-based company is a little more expensive than most of its competitors in this category and price range. Particularly noteworthy: the electronic wireless shifting system from SRAM, which is a real rarity in this price range. Added to this is the Kiox 400 display with navigation function, which is a clear plus for touring cyclists.
The electronic SRAM S-1000 Eagle Transmission with 12 gears stands out in the equipment list. However, the wireless shifting on the Canyon requires a separate battery, which you have to keep an eye on. Canyon also uses Sram brakes: DB8 Stealth four-piston brakes with large 200 mm discs at the front and rear provide decent deceleration.
For the suspension, Canyon relies on a RockShox Lyrik Base and a Deluxe Select shock - a solid combination for trail and touring use. The package is rounded off by DT Swiss H1900 wheels with Schwalbe Magic Mary and Hans Dampf tyres. On the rear wheel, the focus here is on good rolling characteristics on flat sections. With the Bosch Kiox-400 display including navigation function and dropper post, the Neuron:On is also equipped for everyday use and trail riding.
The Neuron sits comfortably and upright - perfect for long tours and relaxed forest trails. Less pressure on the hands has a positive effect, especially on flat sections. On very steep and technical uphills, however, the Neuron requires more active steering to stay on track. This is where the front wheel can lose pressure. Thanks to its long chainstays, however, this only really becomes noticeable in really difficult sections. Until then, the Neuron:On AL 9 climbs absolutely solid and uncomplicated.
On descents, the bike scores with its light-footed, intuitive handling. It glides smoothly over obstacles and remains surprisingly manoeuvrable despite its high weight. It reaches its limits on very fast, hard trails: the rear suspension tends to run out of steam here, as it willingly releases its travel. Big jumps or extreme hits are not its core strength. On the other hand, the rear generates a lot of traction and comfort even at slow speeds. The Neuron:On AL is neither a downhill extremo nor the ultimate lively trail speedster. With its pleasant handling, it strikes just the right balance between the two. This makes it easy to control and an uncomplicated companion for many bikers.
